TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Vigo County lawmakers are celebrating a historic increase in third-grade literacy rates for Hoosier students following the results of this year’s IREAD assessments.
The Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD) assessment is designed to test Indiana third-graders’ reading proficiency. This year’s IREAD data indicates about 87.3% of Indiana’s third-graders exhibit proficiency in foundational reading skills.
State Rep. Bruce Borders (R-Jasonville) said this proficiency rating is an improvement of five percentage points compared to last year’s scores, which is the largest single-year increase since Indiana launched IREAD in 2013.
“Literacy is the cornerstone of a quality education, and these results show our investments in early reading are paying off,” Borders said. “This is a win for Hoosier kids and their futures.”
State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) and State Rep. Tim Yocum (R-Clinton) also commented on the improvement in IREAD scores.
“These latest scores are proof of what’s possible when educators, parents and communities work together,” Heaton said. “Our students are capable of great things when we give them the tools they need to thrive.”
“Early literacy sets the stage for lifelong success,” Yocum said. “We must continue working to ensure every Hoosier child has the opportunity to excel.”
This year’s scores also put Indiana’s literacy rate at this grade level back to pre-pandemic levels.
