TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — With the recent national headlines involving accidents at airports, many residents have been inquiring about the safety of Terre Haute Regional Airport.
This morning, at a regular meeting between airport staff and board members, executive director for the airport, Craig Maschino, said they reviewed all of their safety procedures.
The airport can say they are doing everything to standard.
However, one thing that did come out of the report, was that Terre Haute Regional is understaffed with air traffic controllers.
The airport has a capacity for 29, fully trained, air traffic controllers but they currently have 13.
These controllers are not hired by specific airports, but rather sent to locations by the FAA.
Yet, Chris Maschino said Terre Haute Regional has just been approved to begin working with a local academy.
“The West Central Indiana Aviation Academy is used to bring those juniors and seniors in here, next fall, to start that pathway in aviation”, Maschino said. “One of those career paths is for being an air traffic controller. They can substitute work experience for college education to be a controller, those jobs are $100,000 to $125,000 a year. It’s a great pathway for our folks here in Vigo County to go and that’s going to help our controllers out.”
The airport is also doing some renovations to the classroom areas of their building.
Maschino said those are going well and will be done soon.
