TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The board room at the Terre Haute Convention Center was officially named Monday morning during a ceremony hosted by the Vigo County Capital Improvement Board (CIB).
Chris Switzer, President of the CIB said, the “David Patterson Board Room” honors the outstanding contribution to the community made by David Patterson.
“It’s humbling,” Patterson said as he was brought to tears. “Very humbling,” he added.
A commemorative wall plaque was unveiled during the event and will be affixed outside the board room.
“I guess I’ll always be here in some sense,” Patterson said. “But it was a wonderful thirty years. I really enjoyed the job.”

Patterson served as the Executive Director of the Terre Haute Convention and Visitor’s Bureau for 30 years. He also served on the CIB board since it was started back in 2017.
Patterson dedicated countless hours to improving the quality of life for residents. “I was always the guy that wished there were 8 days in a week,” Patterson said.
He capitalized on tourism opportunities for the area.
“When I started, the first 15 years, they never collected over $262,000,” Patterson said. “And my last year we collected over 3 million. And so that tells you not only the potential, but what it’s brought,” he added.
Patterson also blazed the sports trail in the area with 13 division-one National Cross Country Championships.
He said Special Olympics and Cross Country both remain close to his heart.
