VIGO Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Honey Creek Fire Department said no one was hurt in a house fire Sunday afternoon.
Crews responded to the 2000-block of East Channel Court in Vigo County just after 4 p.m.
They said the owner of the home was away for a few hours when they came back and found smoke coming from the utility room.
According to fire officials, the door of the room being closed likely kept the fire from spreading.
“We do want to stress that even when you’re sleeping to close your door. There’s a good push for ‘close before you doze’. Push your door closed before going to bed. That will save you valuable time and minutes in the event of a fire,” said Battalion Chief Kevin Murphy.
Murphy said the home suffered significant smoke damage.
The cause is under investigation.
