Outside of Hoosier Prairie Elementary School you can find several signs referencing kindness.
This is part of a new club that was created at the school with the help of a 5 year 2.8 million grant received by the Vigo County School Corporation, which is to be used for incorporating social-emotional learning into the curriculum.
“We had the unique opportunity for a social-emotional learning club through the Project Aware grant. We kind of sat down and decided we wanted to do a kindness club,” said Meghan Olds, Hoosier Prairie Elementary School counselor.
Since its creation, over 100 students at Hoosier Prairie have signed up for the club which aims to spread kindness.
Wednesday, several of these students used what they have learned and passed out homeless care kits in Terre Haute.
“There’s chips, crackers, and wipes, socks, tuna and crackers,” said Finley Frazier, Hoosier Prairie Kindness Club member.
Olds says the Kindness Club is about teaching young students how to give back .
“Helping our kids learn to help others in the community who are less fortunate, kind of open their eyes and just spread kindness,” Olds said.
This is just the first of many projects scheduled for the Kindness Club.
Olds says one project being planned is to make blankets for the elderly in nursing homes.
Olds says the club is fundraising to continue their efforts once the grant money ends.
