The watermelon bust is a national tradition for the fraternity, with proceeds going to the local Catholic Charities food bank and feeding America.
More than 60 students participated in the event, forming teams and finding creative ways to bust watermelons.
The winning team received a free night of fun at the Terre Haute bowling center. Prior to the event, Lambda chi alpha held a raffle and charged a team entry fee as part of their fundraising. They raised nearly $200 for their cause.
They said their event is a unique way to get others involved in philanthropy.
“A lot of times if you just say donate money to charity, people might just walk by so it’s not worth their time. But at least with this, it gives them a reason to stop and be a bit more aware,” said fraternity member, Ryan Epstein.
Watermelons for the bust were donated by Melon Acres.
