TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The source of a suspicious package found Wednesday in downtown Terre Haute is still unknown.
Around 7 p.m. Wednesday, a passerby saw a suspicious person place a package into a mailbox at 4th and Ohio. According to the witness, the person was wearing a black zip-up hoodie with the hood covering their had. The person was also wearing a white glove on the hand holding the package.
The witness told authorities the package was not placed into the mailbox until the traffic light turned green.
Authorities blocked off the area, and the Indiana State Police Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team was called to investigate the mailbox.
The package was eventually deemed safe, and the scene was cleared around 10 p.m.
Sgt. Matt Ames, ISP public information officer, said ISP and the Terre Haute Police Department appreciated “people being vigilant” and reporting suspicious activity, so it can be investigated properly.
