ALGONQUIN, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — Halloween is just around the corner, and soon trick-or-treaters will be hitting the streets ready to fill their bags with sweet treats. But, what treats will they be hoping to find?
In Indiana, residents will be grabbing for the M&Ms, according to a
study
by Bid-on-Equipment. But as the most popular candy in 12 states, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are a safe bet too.
In Illinois, Jolly Ranchers are what parents will be sneaking out of their kid’s trick-or-treat bags. AirHeads, Nerds, SweeTarts and Gummy Worms are the least popular throughout the country, according to the survey.
While M&Ms are the favorite in Indiana and in most metropolitan cities across the nation, those living in Indianapolis prefer Life Savers.
How much is all of this candy going to cost? The average parent spends $35.01 on candy this Halloween.
But, it isn’t just parents forking out the cash. Even those without children get in on the fun, with more than 3 out of 4 adults choosing to stay home and answer the door to hand out candy. The national average spent on candy is $25.64.
According to the survey, ideal trick-or-treating hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. and trick-or-treaters age out of the tradition at 15 years old.
Over the past year, thousands of Americans have signed a petition to move Halloween to the last Saturday in October. In fact, more than half of the country seems to be in favor of the change according to those surveyed by Bid-on-Equipment. While the other half prefer to keep the holiday on its original date.
