TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Loyal Veterans Battalion spends every Saturday and Sunday, using nails and wood, to create a fresh start for veterans in need.
“What we’re working on here is transitional housing for veterans. Once we’re done we hope to be able to give a veteran the opportunity to live here for six months to a year as they transition back into civilian life,” said Michael Egy of the Loyal Veterans Battalion.
Each volunteer taking their time to remodel the Terre Haute home has a special connection to this cause.
“I’m honored to be an Army vet. We’re trying to do good things here, you know, in our community,” said Keith Ketner of the Loyal Veterans Battalion.
According to Egy, 99.9% of the work on the home has been performed by veterans.
Egy added that the home, donated by an anonymous angel donor, will have a brand new look.
“We’ve converted it from a two bedroom to a one large bedroom. It will be all ADA compliant,” he said.
The home will serve as a place of hope for those who need a supportive push to get back on track.
“Right now there are 67-thousand homeless veterans. Many have lost their way and never made the transition back into civilian life. We hope that with this opportunity we can present them with a house to where they can not worry about their rent and such like that,” Egy said.
The Loyal Veterans Battalion is accepting applications for the transitional home.
They hope to have it complete in January.
