The Indiana Municipal Primaries have come to an end, but the race for Vigo County Mayor is far from over.
City Councilman Karrum Nasser easily won the Democratic primary with 71 percent of the vote over David Conder (17 percent) and Robert Hamilton (12 percent). He will now face off against incumbent Duke Bennett, who wasn’t challenged in the primary, and Independent Pat Goodwin in the November election.
Vermillion County saw some unusual election results with the City Council Ward 4 Democrat race ending in a tie between Robert F. Lindsey Jr. and Scott Miller. Each received 36 votes, or 43.9 percent. Larry S. Wagle came in a distant second with 10 votes, or 12.2 percent.
The Vermillion County Clerk cited Indiana law as to what will happen next. According to the Indiana government website, “whenever a tie vote occurs at a primary election, a “CANDIDATE VACANCY” results. (IC3-13-1-17) The resulting vacancy is filled through a caucus of eligible precinct committeemen, the party chairman (if the chairman has received authority from the county committee to fill candidate vacancies), or a caucus of party officers. (IC 3-13-1-6).”
In other election news, Linton mayoral candidate John Wilkes took a 92 percent lead over Jerry Mays in the Democratic primary.
In the Jasonville Republican Primary, Larry Watters, Sr. won with 73 percent of the votes over Tony Towell.
Loogootee mayoral candidate Noel Harty won the Democrat primary with 64 percent of the vote over Robert Downey.
