Trying to get from West Terre Haute to Terre Haute can be difficult if you don’t have a mode of transportation.
Those walking and riding bike along US 40/ Highway 150 are only inches away from danger.
That’s why residents and officials are excited for a new addition along the highway.
“We are excited for this as much as Vigo County and the residents of that area,” Indiana Department of Transportation Director of Communication Debbie Calder said.
Plans for the walkway have been going on for years but it wasn’t until last fall when county and state officials announced a partnership to build an 8.7 million dollars pedestrian bridge.
“This project is a muilt-use path and it will be approximately 11 feet by 3 inches wide with 10 feet clear space for walking or biking,” Calder said.
Federal and state funding will cover more than 7 million dollars with Vigo County covering 20 percent or the remaining cost of the project.
The path will be located on the south side of the highway and stretch 1.17 miles.
The bids on the project will start in January. Whether permitting construction will start April of 2020 with the east bound lane down to one lane while crews work. If everything goes according to schedule the project should be completed by November of the same year.
“It’s going to be a tremendous asset for the pedestrians out there while they are traveling back and forth,” Calder said.
INDOT plans to reveal the designs for the bridge in October.
