TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Indiana State University officials, area law enforcement and other local leaders hosted a community discussion Tuesday focused on “The Walk.”
“The Walk” is an unsanctioned pub crawl down Wabash Avenue that several ISU students participate in during Homecoming weekend each year.
After last year’s event got out of hand, community leaders took a proactive approach to make changes. During the meeting, leaders noted that safety is the number one priority.
The focus is not to arrest everyone, but instead is meant to keep residents safe and protect their property Terre Haute Police Chief Shawn Keen and ISU Police Chief Joe Newport told the audience.
Several citizens voiced concerns about the number of pop-up locations at the event and the response time of officers.
One way ISU will tackle safety concerns will be by expanding the designated walker program.
