TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Indiana State University is considering an increase to tuition and student fees.
Wednesday, university officials held a public hearing to discuss the matter.
The meeting itself only lasted 10 minutes and few were in attendance; however, the take-away from the meeting was that ISU wants to increase tuition by 1.96 percent over the next two school years.
“Well today’s hearing was that opportunity for anyone to come forward, and we only heard from one on a public comment and that was the new student government association president supporting the idea and concept of that wellness fee,” Indiana State University President Dr. Deborah Curtis said.
The increase would mean full-time undergraduate students would pay an increase of about $79 a semester and $80 the following year.
Currently for Indiana resident undergraduate students taking 12 to 18 credit hours per semester the tuition cost is around $8,800.
Funds from the proposed tuition hike would go to maintaining and improving the institution.
A $75 health and wellness fee was also discussed.
The only public comment from the meeting was from the school’s student government association who said they are for the increase.
The health and wellness increase would help decrease student wait time to see a counselor and increase mental education for both students and staff.
“We find that the need for these services for our students is increasing, and we have seen that as well,” Curtis said.
The recommendation will be heard at the next board meeting on June 21st.
Among four year public colleges in the state of Indiana, ISU is still less expensive than Ball State, Purdue and IU.
