TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Since June 18th of this year, Vigo County Schools superintendent Dr. Rob Haworth has held 4 community meetings to discuss a $7 million dollar operational referendum for safety, health, wellness, transportation, and staffing.
They are meetings that Haworth says have been helpful.
“When
you’re talking about the safety of students, when you’re talking about
the wellness of students, when you talk about the need to be able to
attract and retain educators here, those are very important things to a
community and it’s resonating very well,” Haworth said.
Monday,
was the final community meeting before Haworth hosts forums to discuss
another referendum which could impact taxpayers in May of 2021.
“Not
only will we talk about the operational referendum and the $4 million
dollars worth of cuts, we’ll also be speaking about the building
project,” Haworth said.
Haworth says both the public meetings
and referendums will allow the community to make a decision about the
future of Vigo County schools.
“We’re putting this measure on the
ballot for our community to be able to make an informed decision. We’re
Vigo County, we’re one community. We may have multiple high schools but
in the end we all care about children and we need to get out and hear
what our community about what they want for the future of our schools,”
Haworth said.
This Wednesday the school corporation will begin the process of selecting a firm to do a transportation audit.
Haworth says the audit will help determine if there are ways to save money through more efficient transportation.
No
specific dates have been chosen for the next community conversations
but Haworth says they will take place from August until October
