TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Old Light House Mission building has been standing for over a hundred years.
After facing devastation just two years ago, it’s found a new purpose that is priced around $25 million.
“Our plan was to just take the building down basically,” said CEO Timothy Fagg.
In 2017, Light House Mission’s location at 1450 Wabash was damaged.
“We had a fire there on the back section of our building on the north end in a warehouse storage area. And we lost the back of the building,” Fagg said.
The old building was considered condemned before being bought by Flaherty & Collins of Indianapolis.
Now, it will be renovated into affordable housing apartments for seniors.
“This will be for low income seniors. I think Flaherty & Collins does a lot of that throughout the state of Indiana,” Fagg said.
Before making the change, Light House Mission petitioned the Vigo County Area Planning Department.
“That petition passed the area planning commission, received a favorable recommendation and went on to city council,” said Jared Bayler, Executive Director of Vigo County Area Planning Department.
Terre Haute City council passed the special ordinance at their July 11th meeting allowing work to begin.
“That’s going to be pretty nice for the community. And seniors will have a good, clean, nice, new safe place to live,” Fagg said.
The apartment building is expected to have 59 units inside and will take about two years to complete.
The Light House Mission also petitioned the state of Indiana for historic preservation of the building.
It was once the home of Miller-Parrot Baking Company which was first opened around 1910.
