Day one of the Vigo County Horse and Pony show at the fair faced some challenges.
The problem with the rain is the arena. It gets the arena really muddy and we have some wet spots that are hard to keep dry,” said Daniel Hunt
One of those challenges is protecting the horses.
Depending on the rain we get, it’s harder on the horses and we try to keep them out of it. It can injure a horse if you get in it,” Hunt said.
Children of all ages who were showing their horses, had a lot to keep in mind to avoid the mud.
“We gotta make sure we’re aware of our surroundings to make sure that it’s there and then you run them into it and you trip or something,” said Cassidy Hunt.
Some riders noticed a difference in their horses.
“Since Buddy doesn’t like the mud it makes him work harder and there’s a big difference in his leads and that stuff because the big chunks of mud in the ground and everything like that.” Kenley Moore said.
However, they say the conditions are nothing new.
“We have to do this a lot. It seems to always rain show day,” Cassidy Hunt said.
But like the professionals they are, They ride through it.
The Vigo County Horse and Pony Show will continue Sunday at 9 a.m.
