On November 14, the school evacuated as a precaution after several students complained of cough and eye irritation.
Air quality tests later determined mold was the cause of the health issues. The two classrooms that tested above industry standards were blocked off until they could be thoroughly cleaned.
“Our efforts to remediate the mold over the Thanksgiving Break were successful,” Bill Riley, Vigo County School Corporation director of communications said in a news release. “The affected rooms had carpet replaced with vinyl composite tile, were repainted, all ceiling tiles were replaced, hard surfaces were scrubbed, duct work was cleaned, air handler unit filters were changed, and we ran commercial air scrubbers last week.”
Riley said the classrooms were retested by an independent air quality company Monday. The results showed the mold had been remediated, allowing students to return to those classrooms.
