TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Red Cross emergency responders are preparing to assist those impacted by Hurricane Dorian.
According to Theo Boots, executive director for Southwest Indiana region of Red Cross, the Red Cross is expecting to provide emergency sheltering for 30,000 people in Florida and 15,000 people in Georgia.
Boot says 240 emergency responders are expected for deployment.
220 are already on their way to the Atlantic Coast.
Boots says as Hurricane Dorian continues to approach Florida, time is important.
“Thousands and thousands of people will be evacuating, as they need to be evacuating, and many of them will not have a place to go. So, Red Cross will be ready with our materials, we’ll be in place by Saturday,” Boots said.
Boots says some of the emergency responders being deployed are Hoosiers.
Several Indiana chapters of the Red Cross are sending some of their emergency response vehicles to help.
At this time, no one from the Terre Haute area are being deployed.
