PARIS, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) – School starts tomorrow for the Paris Union School District, and one elementary school will be able to add two new preschool classes to better serve at risk children.
The Illinois State Board of Education gave the Memorial Elementary School two grants totaling over $300,900 to fund the curriculum, transportation, food and staffing for the two new preschool classes.
Superintendent Jeremy Larson explained 60 new students will be enrolled, 40 in the half day program and 20 in the full day program.
Larson said the school was chosen due to their percentage of high risk children, and these preschool additions will help make education available for all.
“So a lot of our students that are at risk they might not have the home environment that’s been stable enough in order for them to start the educational process,” he said. “Whether it’s reading, social skills, or even just the simple identification of the idea of numeracy.”
The preschool doesn’t cost families any money to enroll their students.
