OLNEY, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — A group gathered in Olney Sunday afternoon with one message in mind: separating the Chicago area from the rest of Illinois.
Illinois Separation group members voiced their opinion on the “constant government failure and constitutional infringements” that started the movement.
Some officials were also present at the rally to explain theories to anyone with economic or legal questions.
Among the desires of Illinois Separation is to draft and vote on a new constitution.
“I think there still has to be a lot of discussion about this. There’s a lot of unanswered questions. I think a more adequate system would be that if Chicago would start legislating instead of making legislation for the entire state that affects their regional issues, if they would stick to voting on that on city council and county board and commission and let the rest of the state have a voice,” said State Representative Runner Cory Musgrave.
Illinois Separation has been traveling around the state to get petition signatures from people in several Illinois counties.
