DAVIESS Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Washington Community Schools is looking to regroup after a proposed multi-million dollar referendum failed on Election Night.
The school system proposed a referendum that would use a property tax increase to fund a $38 million project over the next 20 years.
“This was intended to be a middle school to operate for the 7th and 8th as a traditional junior high school and the five six would be a transitional school in nature, but basically function as an elementary school,” said Superintendent Dan Roach.
Election Night on November 5 was the deciding factor, with 61% of voters voting against the referendum. A result Superintendent Roach said he didn’t expect.
“There’s not doubt we’re disappointed. We’re disappointed for the kids, first of all. And the many opportunities that they would have had with this construction,” he said.
Members of Washington’s community sais while they support improving the educational system, they believe there could be a better solution that works for everyone.
“Our teachers are important to us, our students are important to us and we want to make sure our community grows. I think the biggest issue is how it’s being done. Some people on the no side think it’s a little bit more extravagant than what we need,” said resident, Sara Voges.
While there’s no current back-up plan, it’s creating an opportunity for the Washington community to find the right answer.
“Let’s not divide the community over this. Let’s come together and find a solution. A vetted solution that’s going to increase the higher standard of education,” said resident, Alex Frederick.
Superintendent Roach said he will ask the community for their input in order to develop a new plan.
