TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Terre haute Fire Department said there has been an increase in brush and grass fires recently.
Due to dry conditions, Vigo County Commissioners have declared a county wide burn ban. The Terre Haute Fire Department also reminded city residents of the ordinances, regarding burning, during normal conditions.
We spoke to Public Information Officer Nick Arnold of the Terre Haute Fire Department. Arnold said, if you live in the city, you can only burn dry seasoned wood. That means no rubbish, trash, or leaves. The fire should be no bigger than 3 feet wide and 3 feet tall, and must be contained in a masonry containment center, or fire pit. As Arnold explains, there are also some other requirements.
“You must be at least 20 feet away from any type of structure, there must be a cleared path 5 feet around your burn area so no loose leaves, nothing like that. Obviously you know you should have your hose or some type of extinguishment agent close to you, and a fire has to be supervised at all times by an adult.” said Nick Arnold, Public Information Officer with the Terre Haute Fire Department.
He also said, not to burn on a windy day. The ordinace says, sustained winds must be five miles per hour or less. The city has these rules, posted in its city code, which can be found online. The burn ban in Vigo County goes from now until March 17th at noon.
