WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Students are expected to return to their classrooms Wednesday after mold caused an evacuation at a Vigo County school last week.
Thursday, students at West Vigo elementary began complaining of cough and eye irritation, leading to the precautionary measures. Once outside the building, symptoms began to dissipate.
Students have been attending Sugar Creek Consolidated since the evacuation.
School officials said they are actively working to get the affected classrooms cleaned following
“We have crews in there right now, Monday morning, working hard to remediate that mold,” said Billy Riley, Vigo County School Corporation director of communications. “They are ripping up the carpet. They are painting. They are replacing the ceiling tiles in those rooms. They’re replacing the air filters in those rooms.”
A
snow day
has been called for Tuesday as teachers head to Indianapolis for
Red for Ed Action Day
. When students return on Wednesday, West Vigo Elementary is expected to be open; however the affected classrooms will remain off limits until after Thanksgiving break.
