TERRE HAUTE Ind., (WTWO/WAWV) — Mayor Duke Bennett and Terre Haute Fire Chief Jeff Fisher swore in new recruits Thursday.
Nine new firemen were welcomed into the department in front of family and friends.
But, they won’t be fighting fires just yet.
According to Chief Fisher, they have months of training ahead as probationary firefighters.
However, he said he’s excited to see his department continue to grow, especially after recent turnover.
“Anytime I can swear in some new recruits it’s just like bringing a new guy home. And you can look over them, keep them safe, and give them as much training so they can go home in the morning and be with their family. It’s a big responsibility,” Chief Fisher said.
In addition to firefighter training, they will also train to become paramedics and EMTs.
