SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — 3rd graders across Sullivan County spent the day outdoors for Sullivan’s Future Farmers of America’s (FFA) annual Ag Day.
Students learned about all types of agriculture including animals, plants, and seeds. They also learned about food science and natural resources. Students were excited to sit in a tractor and go for a hayride while learning about equipment safety and agriculture machinery.
Sullivan FFA Advisor and Sullivan High School Agricultural Teacher, Kevin Cross, said Ag Day is planned and implemented by junior high and high school FFA students.
“Getting them to really understand that agriculture is a huge part of our economy here in Sullivan County,” Cross said. “And really helping them understand that agriculture is more than just cows, sows, and plows, it is an industry that supports really, the entire southwestern Indiana.”
Students from Carlisle Elementary School, Northeast East Elementary School, Northeast North Elementary School, and Rural Community Academy enjoyed the hands-on experience.
Carol Witt, Sullivan FFA President, has been helping plan the event for four years. She recalled how much fun she had back in 3rd grade as a participant. Today, she was teaching the kids all about her goats.
“I think the kids really like it. I know they really like to see the animals and interact with them. But I’ve kind of wandered around a little bit today and I think they really seem to be enjoying learning about something they might not learn about in school and just the hands-on interactions that we have is really entertaining to them,” Witt said.
