TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Terre Haute family moved into their new home on Chase Street thanks to the help of the Wabash Valley Habitat for Humanity.
The non-profit organization works to provide stable, safe, and affordable housing for the people in the community.
Akqilia Long and her children will now be able to enjoy their new home.
According to Habitat, homeowners receive zero-interest mortgages with payments they can afford. They also invest “sweat equity” in their homes by helping to build or refurbish them.
Long expressed her excitement about owning her first home.
“My children, they will have their own bedrooms, that’s what I’m most excited about. I have self-closing cabinets so they won’t smash their fingers or anything like that. I’m just really excited about finally being able to move in,” said Long. “I go to put in work on my own home. I didn’t get to build it because it was already built, but I got to do things like painting and I worked at the restore a lot,” she continued.
According to the organization, there are now more than 70 homes built in partnership with Wabash Valley Habitat for Humanity.
Habitat noted that this completed project marks the 4th home completed in Terre Haute this year.
