TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – This week the man dubbed as the “American Taliban” will be released from the Terre Haute federal prison.
In our interactions with the federal prison, we confirmed that John Walker Lindh’s projected release date will be this Thursday, May 23. Walker Lindh was arrested in Afghanistan in 2001 during the U.S. invasion. After he pleaded guilty to fighting for the Taliban after the 9/11 attacks, the government dropped terrorism charges against him, according to an NBC News article.
Walker Lindh served 17 years of his 20 year sentence. In an NBC News article at the time of sentencing Walker Lindh told the court if he knew of the Taliban what he knows now, he would have never joined them.
Walker Lindh is now 38 years old.
