TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A plea agreement has been filed in the case of a Terre Haute man accused of cutting a young boy’s tongue.
Scott A. Edwards appeared in court Thursday where a plea agreement was entered on charges of aggravated battery and neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury.
The charges came after a boy in his care was treated for injuries at a local hospital. The boy was later transferred to Riley Children’s Hospital.
A doctor with the Child Protection Team at Riley Hospital noted the child’s tongue was lacerated down the middle and a piece at the tip of the tongue appeared to be missing. She said the cut “appeared clean and was not torn,” which led her to believe a tool, such as scissors, was used to cause the injury, according to court documents.
Edwards’ plea agreement did not include an agreement as to sentencing. A sentencing hearing was scheduled for July 15.
The boy’s mother, Holly Cota, is facing charges of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury and obstruction of justice. A jury trial has been scheduled for June 17.
