DAVIESS COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Officials with Washington High School will make arrangements to allow students access to school grounds in the wake of 17-year-old Eli Newberry’s death in a crash Sunday evening.
Newberry died in a single-vehicle crash where for an unknown reason his truck left the roadway striking a tree. First responders were able to get Newberry out of the vehicle, however, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Assistant Superintendent and former Washington High School Principal Steve Peterson released the following statement regarding Newberry’s death.
Last night around 7:30pm there was a single car accident on Hwy 50 that involved one of our WHS students. We are deeply saddened at the tragic loss of Eli Newberry. Despite the heroic efforts of our First
Responders, Eli succumbed to his injuries.Washington High School Gates 4 & 5 will be open Tuesday, July 12, 2022 from 9:00am – 11:00am and 1:00pm – 3:00pm for any students who wish to speak to a counselor. Students may also have access to Eli’s
locker if they are so inclined to leave messages of support and condolences.These are trying times for our students, staff, and community. Our hearts are heavy as we yet again mourn the sudden passing of a young life. Eli will be missed, but not forgotten.

Posts on Facebook, indicate that Newberry regularly represented his school in fishing tournaments across the country. Newberry had reportedly signed a letter of intent to go to school at Wabash Valley College and join their competitive fishing team following graduation next year.
