WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — There’s a new community garden in West Terre Haute and it was planted by local students.
West Vigo High School’s government class was tasked with coming up with ideas for community projects. The garden was one of two projects selected to receive an Oakley Foundation Grant.
The grant funding comes through the Purdue Extension’s My Hometown Is Cool program. The garden is located next to the little league baseball park in West Terre Haute.
Students planted a wide variety of vegetables and herbs that will be available for the community.
“We just planted it because we figured that we’re going to be donating all of the produce so we figured they are things people would want to have,” garden co-founder Hailey Kane said.
“When we have groups come in to harvest the majority of it is going to go to food pantries, churches and maybe a couple of local businesses,” said co-founder Erin Murphy.
The other student project that received funding was the Taste of West Terre Haute event.
