TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Congressman Larry Bucshon (R-IN) announced Tuesday a grant from the Department of Health and Human Services for Hamilton Center’s Head Start program.
Hamilton Center will receive $1,084,935 for Head Start. It’s a program that offers free, high quality child care for low-income parents who are working or in school.
Hamilton Center will be opening a new classroom for a total of seven classrooms. They also offer a home-based option.
Jasmine Jones, a mother who uses the program, shared her experience with us.
“It’s affordable. I’m able to get him here on time and it worked a lot with my school schedule, and the staff is really great. They’re understanding and they help a lot as far as resources in the community,” says Jones.
Program manager Amanda Posey says they serve families who are low-income, in foster care or homeless.
“Parents are able to have new opportunities that they may not have had before when they enrolled in our program. They can find a job, look for housing and we’re there to help every step of the way,” says Posey.
Posey says their program also recently received $500 from Early Learning Indiana for the breastfeeding room, as well as $5,000 from the Wabash Valley Community Foundation for a new play area.
