TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Over 100 middle schoolers from across Indiana were seeking national and state-level competition through Indiana MathCounts, a competition that promotes math development among kids.
The contest was held on the campus of Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.
Some of the state’s youngest mathematicians were tested on three main categories, competition, testing individual and team-working skills.
Students that ended with the best four scores will represent Indiana at a National match in Washington, D.C. The Hoosier State won the contest in 2015.
Wabash Valley schools that participated in this event include Honey Creek, North Clay, Otter Creek, St. Patrick`s, Sarah Scott, West Vigo and Woodrow Wilson. ,
“It’s very exciting to see kids here that are interested in math,” said Associate Mathematics Professor with Rose Hulman, Leanne Holder.
Four Vigo County middle school students were among the top 20 finishers in the 2022 Indiana MATHCOUNTS competition. The students were sixth, seventh, or eighth graders.
Honey Creek Middle School had three finishers within the top 17: Ethan He, eighth; Sai Boda, 16th; and Jeffrey Chen, 17th.
Saint Patrick School’s Christopher Park was 20th.
“We’re hoping that by exposing students to Rose-Hulman, they will become more interested in stem and maybe they will join us in a few years to become a future engineers,” Holder said.
