Each week, I’m highlighting some of my favorite new songs!
Some are new singles, others are album cuts, but they’re all guaranteed to be stuck in your head all day long!
So, let me just preface this by saying that I could fangirl over Luke Combs for all hours of the day so you should be impressed that only one of his (masterful) songs made the cut here.
Also, don’t be annoyed by the amount of glowing adjectives I use to describe Luke’s talent, songs, music, voice, etc. You get the point.
NOW, let’s begin, shall we?
Luke’s debut album, This One’s For You, was
released over a year ago
after the monumental success of his breakthrough hit, Hurricane.
FUN FACT:
That song was really the lynchpin in his rise to fame because when he was origInally recording the EP, he only had enough money to master one track and he hedges his bets on Hurricane. He later released it on iTunes as a single and sold 14,000 copies in the first week and his meteoric rise is history from there.
LIKE I SAID, FANGIRLING FOR DAYS.
The entire album really is something impressive to behold, kind of like a harkening back to rowdy Honky Tonk 90’s and 00’s country but also a blend of clever, modern songwriting and Luke’s powerhouse vocals.
He kills his own songs, but also so at ease performing covers, too. Check out his cover of Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car:
OH!
AND THIS GUY JUST LEARNED HOW TO PLAY GUITAR WHEN WAS 21
…LIKE 7 YEARS AGO. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
I really do believe he’s the next – or current – big talent in country music and if he needs a roadie he can literally call me at any hour of the day or night and I’ll answer.
As if the first 12, Combs co-penned tracks weren’t lovely enough ALREADY, Luke treated us to FIVE NEW SONGS ON THE DELUXE VERSION OF THE ALBUM RELEASED LAST MONTH! They’re all “Classic Luke Combs†(if you can classify an up-and-comer like Luke as “Classic†yet).
My favorite from the new tracks is Houston, We Got A Problem, a love song disguised as a stadium jam. Luke’s clever lyrics describe his life on the road, including a particularly lonesome stop in the Lone Star State where he realizes what he’s really missing. I think the best part is the skill in the song’s lyrics, particularly the turn of phrase in that ties the chorus together.
