TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — As the community mourns the death of a local doctor who worked for years helping people with substance abuse, Hamilton Center President and CEO Melvin L. Burks reflected on the man he called a friend, mentor, and servant of the public in Dr. Randy Stevens.
Burks said that, in his opinion, words cannot do justice to the legacy left behind by Dr. Stevens. Calling Stevens a “believer in people” Burks explained that he was instrumental in helping the Hamilton Center grow.
“He really helped me when I became an employee of Hamilton Center,” said Burks. “And then when I became the CEO of Hamilton Center, he was there, he came to talk to me, he said, ‘Anything that I can do for you to help you, call upon me.’ And quite frankly, I didn’t even have to call on him, he always showed up. So he’s just a dear friend, and he will be forever etched in my heart.”
“24 hours a day, 7 days a week, this individual stood up for what he believed in” Said Burks when discussing stevens’ lengthy history in helping folks with addictions and substance abuse.
In December of 2021, Stevens was honored with the “Sagamore of the Wabash” award as well as the “Chapman S. Root” award, recognizing him for his decades of service to the community.
