SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Locals gathered Friday in front of the Sullivan County Courthouse to share their support for breastfeeding as part of World Breastfeeding Week.
The Sullivan WIC Program partnered with local hospitals and other groups to spread awareness and support of breastfeeding.
The rally included a group latching moment, a guest speaker, and the reading of a proclamation from Sullivan Mayor Clint Lamb declaring August 1-7 as National WIC Breastfeeding Week.
Event organizers say there are many benefits to breastfeeding babies.
“It’s healthier for the baby, it’s made specifically for the baby, it’s easier for the baby to digest, it reduces the chance of cervical and breast cancer in both mom and baby, helps the baby grow better and all around better nutrition,” said Sullivan WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Kryslin Shelton.
WIC is hoping to raise the percentage of breastfeeding mothers in Sullivan to 60 percent through education and events like the one Friday.
