TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A new skatepark was recently built in Sheridan Park in Terre Haute, making it the second such park in the city.
Mayor Duke Bennett said the skate area was originally an abandoned pool that the city opted to renovate.
“A perfect idea came up that we could turn it into a smaller skate park as compared to the other park,” says Bennett. “We had a lot donations that came in because people just wanted to make this happen for the kids in this part of town.”
The construction costs, according to Bennett, were well within the proposed budget. Bennett says the cost building the skate park, would’ve have been the same as demolishing and renovating the old pool.
Dozens of skaters showed up for the ribbon cutting to test out the new park. Logan Niedermeier, who lives in the neighborhood, is excited to have this right around the corner.
“It’s nice to see that people are looking out for the future generation,” said Niedermeier. “I live right down the street and this is much nicer than having to travel all the way down south.”
The city is hoping that the skatepark helps the community and Bennett said they are open to the possibility of hosting events at the park in the future. There is also some discussion, according to Bennett, of developing a third skate park in Terre Haute in the future.
