SULLIVAN Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Waapaahsiki Siipiiwi Mound Historical Park has been around in Sullivan County for many years.
Those who care for the park want to give it a new meaning.
“If they could just come out and see it, I know their heart will tell them to help us,” said Alice Barnard.
The park was given to a small group by Indiana Michigan Power Company. in 2013.
Now, the park has become a beautiful ground with many surprises.
“Now we have a meaningful, beautiful park where you can come and bring a chair, bring your family, and have wonderful family time together. This is what we want to see this being used for.
The group is asking for the community’s help to make the park about more than Indian history. One of their goals is create events that will draw a variety of visitors.
“We’re all over sixty five and so even just cutting the grass and maintaining is really a hard job. Giving us ideas of what can be done. Fresh ideas of things that we could do for this place to even make it better,” said Alice Barnard.
For those interested in lending a hand to the park, there will be an open house on September 7 with tours at 10 a.m.,12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
