VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Camping nostalgia can be found in southern Vigo County this weekend. The “Antique Camper Rally” is underway at Fowler Park.
Roger and Jill Kennedy purchased their 1969 “Low Flight Shasta” as a retirement project.
“She’s done all of the work,” Roger said. “I don’t touch it. It’s her baby.”
They, like Janet and Dan Kleptz, travel to various parks throughout the summer and attend vintage camper rallies. The Kleptzes own a 1968 camper they saw in man’s yard.
“It was full of beer cans and cigarette butts,” Janet Kleptz said.
They bought it anyway and took 6 months restoring it.
“I always say we have the ugliest camper in the campground because it’s all original. I mean it’s the original floor, paneling, ceiling, cabinets,” Kleptz explains.
According to Vigo County Parks Superintendent, Adam Grossman, the campground is booked with more than 50 vintage campers that date from the 1930s to 1979.
“There’s a lot of time, effort, sweat, tears, money that goes into restoring some of these campers and a lot of pride as well,” comments Adam Grossman.
You can take a walk through vintage campers during an open house from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 12.
Fowler Park is located at 3000 E Oregon Church Road, Terre Haute, IN 47802
