VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – South Vermillion High School is preparing the next generation of reporters and producers as they now provide a class that helps students who have an interest in media.
What started out as an opportunity to showcase athletic contests and special events has now turned into a class. Students are now taking a media course in which they are learning skills that go into making a TV broadcast.
“We started live-streaming our athletic events and things like that and now that those athletic events have come to a close and we’re kind of back into the yellow and blue area,” said David Basan, South Vermilion career and technical education teacher. “Outdoor sports we’re probably not going to live stream those a lot so we got the chance to actually focus on doing a news broadcast.”
For one of South Vermillion’s reporters, his interest was sparked as soon as he heard about the new course.
“I went to Mr. Basan to see what the class was going to be about and after he explained it to me, I thought that would be pretty cool,” said sophomore Easton Terry. “I went to my mom and asked her if I could drop her class.”
Students are learning software editing such as Adobe Premiere and InDesign but Basan says they could lose funding.
“Mr. (Mark) Schimmel came to me and let me know that the legislature is actually trying to defund some of the lesser moderate programs in the CTE area,” said Basan. “We won’t be getting any money and the kids seem to really like the class. They’re having a good time at it. They’re learning a skill that can be added onto in the future and possibly a profession.”
Mr. Basan says next year this class will be offered in three different levels starting from beginner and becoming more advanced as you move up.
“Just getting to come in and be on TV and see your classmates in the hall and hey you did good on the news today,” said Terry.
