CLARK COUNTY, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) – Two dates stick out the most to Leslie Roberts.
Oct. 31, 2014, the day her daughter, Kaylyn Whitaker was found dead in her boyfriend Connor Scott’s Martinsville, Illinois home.
And Feb. 24, 2019, the day Scott admitted to her murder.
“I don’t know how you could live with pointing a gun at someone and ending their life,” Roberts said.
Whitaker’s death was first thought to be a suicide, it was later ruled a homicide.
For months, Whitaker’s family and friends fought for justice.
On Sept. 30, Scott pleaded guilty to two counts of first degree murder.
“Thirty-seven years is a long time to have to spend behind bars and think about how you ended somebody else’s life,” said Roberts. “Maliciously ended someone else’s life.”
Scott must serve all of his 37 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, followed by three years of monitored parole.
Scott has received his punishment, but to Roberts, no amount of time served will make living without her daughter any easier.
“I don’t think we’ll ever feel like justice has been totally served with our situation. Because the loss of Kaylyn is immeasurable,” she explained. “I mean we just miss her so much. We hurt for her everyday. It is so hard being without her.”
