TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Indiana State University officials said a push to become a completely tobacco, vapor and smoke-free campus is all about student health.
“Student health and safety is always at the top of our minds,” said Mark Alesia, director of university communication.
The campus is already relatively smoke free, aside from a few designated smoking areas; however, vaping isn’t regulated the same way on campus. ISU Trustees will meet Thursday and Friday to discuss a new draft policy that would limit vaping to the same smoking areas.
The draft policy was based on a report from the ISU Tobacco Free Task Force created last year by university president Deborah Curtis.
Trustees will not vote on the final policy until May, but it is only the first step. Alesia said the university hopes to eventually phase out those designated smoking areas.
The campus received a grant from CVS Health Foundation last March to advocate for, adopt and implement 100 percent smoke- and tobacco-free campus policies, including limiting the use of e-cigarettes.
