Sycamore students and staff gathered at the intersection of 13th and Wabash to begin a sweep of the street and its surrounding area. Volunteers picked up waste and recyclable material from Memorial Stadium all the way to campus.
Bottles, pizza boxes and solo cups were discarded in the effort to tidy the street. One notable volunteer was ISU President Deborah Curtis. She was thrilled to see students showing an effort in the community.
“Well it just reiterates for us again, how important it is to not just prepare our students for a career, but for life and communities, and being part of a community. Our Students, especially the ones who show up here today, they take that seriously. It’s a pride they have in saying: ‘I want to contribute to my community’. That’s what we hold so dearly as a distinctive quality of Indiana State University.”
Those in charge of the event considered their numbers a success as more students showed up to volunteer than had signed up in the first place.
“Homecleaning” organizers are hopeful that the initiative will be a part of the university’s homecoming weekend for years to come.
