TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Schools are reporting that they’re seeing more behaviors in children related to trauma. Helping those children was the focus of a conference on Tuesday.
School professionals from around the state gathered at Indiana State University for the Connecting the Dots conference.
They learned from experts how to recognize behaviors from trauma in children and adults. Then, they learned how best to help.
Janet Buckenmeyer, the Dean of ISU’s Bayh College of Education, says recognizing the signs of trauma early in a child’s life increases their chances of being successful later on.
“Research tells us that if kids are not doing well by third grade, chances of behavioral problems later in life and even incarceration really go up,” says Buckenmeyer.
This was the first year for the conference.
