TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – While discussions are ongoing with potential buyers, management of a Terre Haute plant that makes home products has filed a WARN Notice with the state of Indiana that it could close this year, affecting more than 80 employees.
A letter outlining the closure from Columbian Home Products, LLC, 1600 Beech St., was received by the state Department of Workforce Development on Tuesday.
“This plant closure will affect 82 employees and is expected to be permanent,” the letter reads. “The terminations are scheduled to begin on December 1, 2019.”
The letter was dated Sept. 30.
Company CEO Dick Ryan explained by phone Wednesday that his company is in talks with potential buyers but the WARN Act requires employees be notified of any potential closure.
According to it’s website, Columbian Home Products makes kitchenware products. There are additional locations in Wisconsin and California. The corporate office is located in Illinois.
A WARN Notice is required by law and stands for the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. Such a notice must submitted 60 days prior to a mass layoff or plant closure.
Columbian Home Products has been in operation in Terre Haute since 1903, Ryan said.
