TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Every month the Vigo County School Corporation recognizes one student from each school who resembles a certain character trait.
These traits encourage students to be leaders both inside and outside of the classroom.
Hoosier Prairie Elementary student Alex Seeling won the September character trait for respect.
“I clean up most of the time. I try to be the nicest I can to most people,” he said. “And I try to be a good friend to everyone.”
After taking notice of his behavior in the classroom, his teacher Melissa Miller nominated for the award.
“He is always very honest and helpful,” she explained. “And he always is following the rules and he’s just a great role model for all the others.”
Miller said she sees a difference in her students when the character trait of the month is announced.
“We can point out specifically what kind of behaviors earned that reward,” she said. “And then I see the other children trying to emulate those behaviors as well.”
Character trait winners receive their awards from Mayor Duke Bennett at a special presentation at City Hall.
Alex said he is proud of his accomplishment and he’s happy to inspire other students to be helpful, kind and respectful.
“For me it feels like a trait where you can be nice to others and respect how things happen,” he explained. “And don’t be mad if things don’t go your way.”
