TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Thrive West Central is offering a training program to help out businesses in the Wabash Valley serve individuals with dementia.
Businesses in Vigo, Parke, Clay, Vermillion, and Sullivan County can take advantage of this program. The Dementia Friendly Business Training Program was developed by IU Health and can equip employees with tools and knowledge to better foster a more welcoming and supportive environment for people with dementia and their caregivers.
“Creating an inclusive and compassionate environment isn’t just the right thing to do — it’s good business,” said Dementia Outreach Specialist Amy Schorr. “Customers remember when they’re treated with dignity and understanding, and they come back.”
The training will cover topics such as recognizing the signs and symptoms of dementia, understanding the disease’s impact, effective ways to communicate, how to create a more accessible space, and how to respond in urgent situations. The course takes around an hour to complete, and if at least 50% of your staff completes the course, you can receive an official Dementia Friendly Business certification. Businesses that attain their certification are also listed on the Dementia Friendly Indiana website and receive a window sticker to let customers know.
If you’re interested in scheduling a training session for your business, you can contact Schorr at 812-238-1561 with extension 260 or by emailing aschorr@thrivewestcentral.com.
