VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Located at the north end of the Vincennes River Walk, Minooteeni Park was created to honor the Native Americans who once lived in the region.
The Wabash Valley Progressives are a non-profit organization aimed to advance and positively change the community. Its treasurer Jennifer Holscher said members of these tribes are helping them make this area as authentic as possible.
“We have been working with the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and the Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma,” said Holscher. “They have been helping us with the facts and history of the tribes.”
This afternoon the park received a check from Duke Energy for $20,000 that Holscher said will help with general upkeep of the park along with adding things to make it as family and community friendly as possible.
“It is also to create a community gathering space where people can come, relax, and enjoy,” said Holscher. “Kids can play and families can have a picnic as well as adding more green space to the parks in Vincennes and Knox County.”
Holscher said they have already achieved their initial fundraising goal and can’t thank the community enough for their support.
“We were just overwhelmed by the generosity of all of our sponsors and donors,” said Holscher. “It has been amazing to see, and it means a lot.”
Holscher added that they plan to add more native plants, trees, and educational signage about the indigenous people who lived in the area. This park is free and is open every day of the week.
