TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Tuesday evening, devastation struck the Wabash Valley.
Severe weather left thousands without power along with damaging the homes of hundreds.
“A lot of my friends got it really bad,” said Terre Haute resident Michael Rae. “One of my good friends had his whole roof blow off. That was not good and that was pretty devastating for them.”
Residents in these areas are at a loss for words seeing what has happened to their neighbors.
“Your heart breaks because you then begin to wonder why them, why did it have to have to them but all the other houses around them are okay,” said Terre Haute resident Greg Ortiz. “As long as they are safe and okay, everything is going to be alright.”
However, this is a community that will always rally behind one another.
“A lot of people showed up,” said Rae. “When I pulled in, I didn’t know if I was going to be the only one, only two or three people, but it turns out there are over a dozen people here helping. It has been good to see everyone come together.”
In times like this, letting your neighbors know that you care can make a world of difference.
“Just the community feel of hopping on Facebook and people that you don’t even know are checking to see if people are okay, and all the message boards asking if people need anything,” said Ortiz. “I am so thankful that we have a community that will come out and take care of the trees and make sure everyone is okay and safe.”
