VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Many people opt for live Christmas trees for their celebrations, but then they don’t always know what to do with them afterward.
The Vigo County Parks Department offers people the chance to dispose of real Christmas trees. You can drop them off at Fowler Park or Hawthorn Park. Just make sure all lights and decorations are removed first.
Park officials explain how the trees are put to good use.
“We use those trees. We submerge them in the water and then they are actually used to create fish habitats in our ponds and in our lakes, so if you have a pond or a lake on your property you can come pick up a live Christmas tree, so you can do that on your own to create your own fish habitat,” Natural Resource Programmer Heather Cosme Milian said.
Cosme Milian also said they receive a lot of trees every year.
“It’s been really successful. We get an extreme overabundance of Christmas trees every single year, more than what we know what to do with, so that’s why this year we wanted to open up the opportunity for anyone who could possibly use the trees for their own personal use, to be able to come and pick them up,” Cosme Milian said.
Cosme Milian said that people can feel free to stop by if they want a tree for their property. Those looking to drop off a tree can do so at the Fowler Park Beach parking lot or at Hawthorn Park’s first parking lot to the left of the entrance.
