TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Sherard Clinkscales will no longer lead Indiana State University athletics following an announcement made by the University on Tuesday.
According to a news release, Clinkscales, who began his time as Director of Athletics in 2016, “has decided to step down from his role to pursue other opportunities.”
Clinkscales exit was effective December 31, 2023.
“I will forever be grateful for the many years I served our student athletes, coaches, and
community as the Director of Athletics at Indiana State University, and I will miss all the
hard-working, talented members of the Athletics Department,” Clinkscales said
Outgoing ISU President Dr. Deborah Curtis thanked Clinkscales for his contributions during his time with the school.
“Indiana State University thanks Sherard for his contributions and advancements to Sycamore Athletics. Under his leadership, he has helped raise the standard among ISU’s Athletics programs. We extend our best wishes to him in all his future endeavors,” Curtis said.
Prior to his time at ISU Clinkscales worked at North Carolina State University.
At Indiana State, Clinkscales played a central role in establishing a winning culture in the athletics program, leading to postseason berths and numerous conference championships across various ISU teams. Notably, he secured Terre Haute as the host site for the NCAA Terre Haute Regional for the Indiana State baseball team. He also helped secure a $2 million donation from the Hulman-George family for new video boards at the Hulman Center

ISU touted Clinkscales leadership in the role, stating that during his tenure student athlete cumulative GPA rose consistently each year, with 15 athletes receiving MVC Board of Directors Academic Excellence Awards in 2023.
The University did not immediately provide details regarding a possible successor or search for replacement.
